IMAGINE YOUR BODY AS A HARD DRIVE: YOU COULD STORE THE WHOLE WORLD'S DATA

If your body was a hard drive, how much data could it store? Your DNA and your brain are the two primary storage entities in your body. Each has its own storage capacity, but combined they can do wonders! A single gram of DNA can store around 215 petabytes of data (215 million gigabytes). To put it in simple terms, DNA could store all of the world's data in one room! If we extracted the entire DNA from your cells, we would end up with a mass of 250 grams. This means, your whole DNA can store around 53,750,000,000 Gigabytes of data. On the other hand, your brain can store approximately 1 petabyte of data (1,000,000 gigabytes). Unlike DNA, the brain’s capacity to store information is more limited, that’s because old data must be erased to make space for new one. As for DNA, it can keep on expanding and replicating to store more and more information. Combining the storage capacity of both your DNA and your brain, the total would be 53,751,000,000 Gigabytes. The most powerful s...

A Biochemist’s View of God’s Wonders: A Molecular Understanding of Life

Most of the time when you mention biochemistry, the first thing that comes to their minds is secondary school chemistry and a little biology; then you hear them make comments like, “I can’t understand it because I don’t like chemistry.” Yes it is chemistry and biology but it is beyond that. It is indeed more than secondary school chemistry and biology. It is in fact the study of all the cellular activities in an organism. Bio-chemistry itself is the study of life at the molecular level. To further explain this; biochemistry is studying living things, ranging from plants, animals and microorganism, from the tiniest cellular function to the complex organs in these living things. Understanding the mechanism of the reactions occurring in the living beings that keeps them existing. Take for instance the human being; how does the brain interpret the series of reactions and activities going on in the body? Biochemistry explains how the pathways with help of several enzymes work together to m...

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT

Great Eminents! Great Metabolites! The study of Biochemistry in Nigeria has been faced with so many predicaments ranging from socio-political, socio-economical and other intrinsic factors. Some of these issues are inevitable while others were catalyzed by us. Repression or inhibition have proven abortive due to the high substrate concentration (the problem) as compared to the inhibitor/repressor ( the solution). The predominance of other Science discipline have also seen the forward reaction (more interdisciplinary conflicts) favoured. Every discipline clamors for recognition and when we do so, we are regarded as being desperate. But they forget that "there is no smoke without fire" a phrase that is analogical to "life sciences is nothing without Biochemistry". Biochemistry is the "life-wire", the "back bone" and the core of any life science discipline. This is because as it simply put, it is the "Chemistry of Life". It seeks to exp...
