A Biochemist’s View of God’s Wonders: A Molecular Understanding of Life

Most of the time when you mention biochemistry, the first thing that comes to their minds is secondary school chemistry and a little biology; then you hear them make comments like, “I can’t understand it because I don’t like chemistry.” Yes it is chemistry and biology but it is beyond that. It is indeed more than secondary school chemistry and biology. It is in fact the study of all the cellular activities in an organism.
Bio-chemistry itself is the study of life at the molecular level. To further explain this; biochemistry is studying living things, ranging from plants, animals and microorganism, from the tiniest cellular function to the complex organs in these living things. Understanding the mechanism of the reactions occurring in the living beings that keeps them existing. Take for instance the human being; how does the brain interpret the series of reactions and activities going on in the body? Biochemistry explains how the pathways with help of several enzymes work together to maintain homeostasis in the human body. If someone is hungry, biochemistry explains how the person’s brain sends signal to initiate hunger pangs thereby informing an individual of the need to eat. After eating, biochemistry explains how the food gets digested and how the nutrients get absorbed, supplying energy to the body for the cellular activities.
In a case of deviation from normal homeostatic state in a living being, biochemistry studies what led to the deviation and how it can be corrected. We can go and on to explain how biochemistry helps us in our day to day lives, however, this constantly reminds us on how awesome God is to have put in place all the pathways, enzymes, organs, tissues and cells in place, how all the plants to grow from seedlings to matured plants as our creator and author of life. Without God in Christ, bio-chemistry would be an illusion.
